Barney Bentall

Barney Bentall took awhile to get around to the realization that what he ought to be doing was making music. In the meantime, he did other things, like run his own construction business. However, once he did make up his mind, success didn't come quickly. Starting in the late 1970's, he and his band were playing the clubs in Vancouver.

An indie album, Losing Control, was released in 1979 For almost the next decade, Barney and his band, then known as the Legendary Hearts, went back and forth across the country, playing bars and small music halls. Then, a live video of "Something to Live For" began to play on Much Music, and things really began to get moving for the band.

With record companies lining up to scope out the band, the guys eventually signed with Sony Music Canada. There have been six albums since then. Between 1989 and 1993, I saw Barney play three times at Wylder's in North Bay, Ontario. On one occasion, the show started late due to the fact that most of the band members were suffering from sunstroke. They'd stopped the previous day somewhere north of Lake Superior and had an impromptu game of baseball. In that instance, as always, the band went on to play a great show anyway. They have a great live version of "Little Red Corvette" as well as all their hits.
